Scope and Content
The bulk of the collection contains information about the presidents of the Greater Hartford branch of the NAACP. This was compiled by longtime member and officer Annette Shack for the organization's centennial in 2017. Additional information includes programs from Annual Membership and Freedom Fund Dinners held between 1994 and 2019, 100 Most Influential Blacks (2011 and 2013), the Great Debate (Harvard vs. Howard, 2015), and assorted smaller events.

The Hartford History Center reserves the right to refuse permission to publish, etc. to those who have not complied with its policies. Use of the collections will normally not be permitted for the purpose of promotion of commercial products and services or political campaigns. Hartford History Center at Hartford Public Library reserves the right to limit the number of photographic prints/captures and to restrict the use or reproduction of rare, fragile, or valuable objects.
Biographical / Historical
The Greater Hartford NAACP was founded by William Service Bell (first president), Mary Townsend Seymour (first vice president), Mary Orvington, W.E. DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, Dr. Rockwell H. Potter, Rev. Richard Randolph Bell, Josephine Bennett, Mary Bulkeley, Katherine Beach Day, Marion Toscan Bennett, Dr. Henry Furnis, MD, and Rev. Harold Patterson. This group met at the home of Mary Townsend Seymour in 1917, and agreed to form a chapter. The chapter began as an organization of citizens of all races, creeds and colors working for the attainment of a society of equality, justice and freedom for all. In the first 100 years, 35 presidents have led the branch.
