Biographical / Historical

The Hartford Civic Center, now the PeoplesBank Arena, is a multi-use arena in downtown Hartford that opened in 1975. It hosts sports events, including hockey, basketball, and figure skating, and musical performances from local and international groups and performers. From 1975-1978 and 1980-1997, it was the home of the New England/Hartford Whalers (WHA/NHL), and from 1997-present it has been the home of the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL). In January 1978, the roof of the Civic Center collapsed following heavy snowfall, and the arena reopened in 1980 after repairs and renovations. The arena's name was changed to the XL Center in 2007 and the PeoplesBank Arena in 2025.
