Biographical / Historical
The Hartford Oratorio Society was a volunteer choir founded in 1921. Members performed oratorios such as Verdi's "Requiem," Handel's "Messiah," and Saint-Saen's "Samson and Delilah" alongside members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1954, the Oratorio Society formally merged with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and became known as the Hartford Symphony Chorale. The groups split in 1972 and the choir became the Hartford Chorale, which is still in operation as a volunteer choir today, performing in Hartford and touring internationally.
