Scope and Contents
The collection contains programs of performances at the Bushnell, runs of the Bushnell Prompter and the Bushnell Program-Magazine, and ephemera including mailing advertisements, season announcements, programs for events held at the Bushnell, tickets, annual messages, and newsletters.
The program collection represents performances of dance, opera, plays and musicals, vocalists and instrumentalists, choirs and orchestras, and film screenings. Performers include Katharine Hepburn and numerous performances by the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo and Paul Robeson.

Permission to publish from the collection must be obtained in writing from curator of the Hartford History Center, and a copy of the published work may be requested by the Hartford History Center. The Hartford History Center reserves the right to refuse permission to publish, etc. to those who have not complied with its policies. Use of the collections will normally not be permitted for the purpose of promotion of commercial products and services or political campaigns. Hartford History Center at Hartford Public Library reserves the right to limit the number of photographic prints/captures and to restrict the use or reproduction of rare, fragile, or valuable objects.
Biographical / Historical
The Horace Bushnell Memorial Hall opened in downtown Hartford in 1930 under the vision of Dotha Bushnell Hillyer (1843 – 1932). The hall was named for Hillyer's father, Horace Bushnell (1802 - 1876), a prominent theologian and minister in Hartford who was also instrumental in the creation of what is now known as Bushnell Park.
The hall was eventually renamed the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and is commonly referred to as simply The Bushnell. It hosts a variety of performances and events, including Broadway tours, Hartford Symphony Orchestra performances, comedy shows, forum conversations, and a Children's Theatre series.
