Scope and Contents

The collection contains programs and announcements regarding the Sarah Shipman Estlow School of Dancing in Hartford. It also includes materials related to Estlow's time at the South District Public Schools, photographs of her personal and professional life, programs and advertisements for other dance recitals and performances, and ephemera from other Hartford organizations. Included with the collection is an autobiographical sketch by Estlow.

Biographical / Historical

Sarah Estlow Vashon was born Sarah Shipman Estlow in Connecticut in 1896. In 1910, as a high school student in Hartford, Estlow started offering private dance classes for children in her home on Park St. at the age of 14. She put on her first recital with students at 15 years old in 1911 and went on to host recitals at Footguard Hall, High St; Putnam Phalanx, Haines St; Odd Fellows Hall, Main St; Bushnell Memorial; and Avery Memorial. For many years, Estlow taught ballroom dance at the Y.W.C.A. on Broad St. She moved to Bloomfield in 1948 and held classes until the early 1960s, then taught privately until her retirement in 1967. Sarah Estlow Vashon passed away in 1986 in Florida.
