Biographical / Historical

Hartford International University for Religion and Peace traces its origins to the Pastoral Union of Connecticut, which was formed in 1833 in East Windsor Hill. In 1865, the institution moved to Hartford, located in the area now occupied by the Wadsworth Atheneum. In 1885, it changed its name to the Hartford Theological Seminary. In 1889, it became the first seminary in America to admit female students. A new campus was built in the West End and opened in 1927 (these buildings are now part of the campus of the University of Connecticut School of Law). Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the Hartford Theological Seminary, the Hartford School of Religious Education, and the Kennedy School of Missions worked together and shared closely, and in 1961 the three institutions legally merged into the Hartford Seminary Foundation. In 2021, Hartford Seminary changed its name to Hartford International University for Religion and Peace.
